How Do You Know You Are Saved?

When I Didn’t Know If I Belonged to Him

For a long time, I struggled with this question:

“Am I really saved?”

I would look at my life and wonder:

  • Is this real?

  • Do I actually belong to Jesus?

Some days I felt close to Him. Other days, I questioned everything.

I found myself constantly measuring:

  • my actions

  • my failures

  • my inconsistencies

Trying to figure out if I was “enough.”

But the more I looked at myself…the more uncertain I became.

Because deep down, I was trying to find assurance in me instead of in Jesus.

What God Showed Me About Assurance

The truth I’m learning is this:

My salvation was never based on my performance.

It was based on His finished work on the cross.

“I write these things… that you may know that you have eternal life.” — 1 John 5:13

God doesn’t want us living in constant doubt. He wants us to know.

But that assurance isn’t empty.

It’s not something we just say to feel better.

Real faith leaves evidence.

Not perfection—but proof that God is truly at work in us.

Why I Couldn’t Pinpoint the Exact Moment I Was Saved

If I’m honest, part of my struggle came from trying to figure out:

“When exactly was I saved?”

I could point to moments:

  • when I walked away from sin

  • when I started seeking God

  • when I felt conviction

  • when everything started to feel real

But it didn’t feel like one single, clear moment.

It felt like a process.

And that used to bother me.

Until I realized something:

God was drawing me long before I understood what He was doing.

He was:

  • placing spiritual people in my life

  • opening my eyes to truth

  • giving me a hunger to know Him

  • convicting my heart

  • leading me step by step

And somewhere in that process…

I truly turned to Him.

Not perfectly. Not all at once.

But genuinely.

And that gave me peace.

Because my assurance doesn’t come from identifying the exact moment—

it comes from seeing what God has done in me since.

So How Do I Know I’m Truly Saved?

Jesus said:

“You will recognize them by their fruit.” — Matthew 7:16

So I started asking myself:

What fruit is actually in my life?

1. A Real Relationship with Jesus

There was a time I said I believed in Him—but I wasn’t walking with Him.

I was living life my own way.

Now, something is different.

I find myself:

  • wanting Him

  • wanting to read His Word

  • wanting to understand Him

  • wanting to be close to Him

Not out of obligation—but because my heart is being drawn to Him.

And I know this:

That desire didn’t come from me.

“We love because He first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19

That’s evidence.

2. A Growing Obedience

I still struggle—especially in my reactions, my words, and my relationships.

But here’s what’s changed:

I’m no longer comfortable staying the same.

Where I once:

  • justified my reactions

  • held onto frustration

  • spoke without thinking

Now… I feel conviction.

There’s a tension inside me.

I don’t always get it right—but I don’t want to live that way anymore.

And that matters.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” — John 14:15

Obedience doesn’t save me—but it shows my heart is changing.

3. A New Response to Sin

This one hits the deepest.

There was a time I could ignore sin.

Push it aside.

Not take it seriously.

But now… I feel it differently.

Even recently, when I wrote things down to “nail to the cross”—I didn’t fully understand what I was committing to.

But I wanted to lay those things down.

And now, when I fall short:

I don’t run from God.

I feel drawn back to Him.

That’s not guilt pushing me away.

That’s conviction pulling me closer.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us…” — 1 John 1:9

That’s evidence of His Spirit in me.

Where My Assurance Actually Comes From

So where does my confidence come from now?

Not from being perfect.

Not from having it all together.

But from this:

  • I see a growing relationship with Jesus

  • I see a desire to obey Him

  • I see a changed response to sin

And that points back to Him—not me.

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…” — Philippians 1:6

What This Means for You

If you’re asking the same question I did:

“How do I know I’m truly saved?”

Start here:

  • Do you want Jesus—not just what He gives?

  • Do you feel conviction instead of comfort in sin?

  • Do you see even small ways your heart is changing?

Not perfectly. But genuinely.

That matters more than you think.

A Final Truth

At the end of the day, my hope isn’t that I hold onto Him perfectly.

It’s that He is holding onto me.

“My sheep hear my voice… I give them eternal life…” — John 10:27–28

Assurance isn’t about being flawless.

It’s about being His.
