What Comes First—God’s Grace or My Obedience?

I Thought I Had to Get It Together First

For most of my life, I believed something that a lot of people quietly carry:

“I need to get my life together before I can really follow God.”

I thought obedience came first.

That I had to prove something.

That I had to clean myself up before I could truly belong to Him.

But looking back now…

I see something completely different.

God moved first.

God Doesn’t Start With Rules—He Starts With Rescue

This became real to me when I read Exodus 20—the Ten Commandments.

Before God gives a single command, He says:

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt…”

That stopped me.

Because God didn’t say:

“Obey Me, and then I’ll save you.”

He said:

“I already saved you—now walk with Me.”

And when I look at my own life…

that’s exactly what He did.

The Life I Couldn’t Walk Away From

There was a time I was on the broad road—

doing what I wanted,

following my desires,

becoming more like the world as time went on.

But the deeper I went…

the more something felt off.

I had never felt more alone.

Because deep down, I knew:

This isn’t who I really am.

I didn’t even know what I believed anymore.

God, Satan, heaven, hell—it all felt uncertain.

But even in that confusion…

something happened I can’t ignore.

Jesus Met Me in the Middle of My Sin

In one of the darkest moments of my life—

right in the middle of sin I didn’t want to let go of—

I saw Jesus on the cross.

Right there.

In the exact place I was struggling the most, suffering in pain for my personal pleasure.

At the time, I didn’t understand it.

And honestly… I kept going.

But now I see it clearly:

That was grace.

Not when I was doing well.

Not when I was trying harder.

But right in the middle of my mess.

Why I Couldn’t Just “Choose Better”

I did try to stop.

Multiple times.

But I couldn’t.

It felt like something had a grip on me—like I wasn’t fully in control.

I wanted to change…but I didn’t know how.

And that’s something I think more people need to hear:

You can’t obey your way out of bondage.

Because real change doesn’t start with willpower.

It starts with God.

God Was Working Before I Ever Turned to Him

Looking back now, I can see what I couldn’t see then:

God never let me go.

Even when I was lost…confused…pulled in the wrong direction…

He was still working.

  • Closing doors

  • Opening others

  • Redirecting me without me realizing it

He knew my heart.

He knew I was searching—even when I was searching in the wrong places.

Now that’s grace.

Obedience Didn’t Come First—It Came After

When things finally began to shift, something surprised me:

I didn’t force my way into obedience.

God led me into it.

He put it on my heart to turn on Word FM.

Then came Focus on the Family.

Then came the Bible.

And as I started encountering Him…

my desire to follow Him grew naturally.

Obedience didn’t feel like pressure anymore.

It felt like a response.

What This Means for You

If you’re wondering,“Do I need to fix myself before I come to God?”

Here’s the truth:

No.

God doesn’t wait for you to get it right.

He meets you where you are.

And then—He changes you from the inside out.

How This Actually Works (In Real Life)

Here’s what I’ve learned you can do right now:

1. Come to God honestly—not cleaned up

You don’t need perfect words or a perfect life. Just come as you are.

2. Pay attention to where He’s already working

Even small nudges, thoughts, or moments—He may already be drawing you in.

3. Spend time with Him before trying to “fix” everything

Start with Scripture, prayer, or even just listening. Relationship comes first.

4. Let obedience grow out of connection

The closer you get to Him, the more your desires begin to change.

5. Trust that He will finish what He started

You don’t have to transform yourself— God does that work in you.

What the Ten Commandments Mean to Me Now

The Decalogue isn’t just a list of rules anymore.

It’s a reminder of order:

God rescues first.

Then He teaches us how to live.

That changes everything.

Because now I know:

  • I don’t obey to earn His love

  • I obey because I’ve experienced it

  • I don’t fight for freedom

  • I live from it

A Promise I Hold Onto

One verse that has stayed with me is:

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11

To me, it’s a reminder that God was guiding me even when I couldn’t see it.

Even when I was lost.

Even when I didn’t understand.

Final Truth

If there’s one thing I know now, it’s this:

Grace always comes before obedience.

God doesn’t wait for you to get it together.

He steps in first.

Just like He did for Israel.

Just like He did for me.

And when you truly experience that kind of grace…

obedience stops feeling like a burden…and starts becoming your response.
